Giving Thanks in the Mountains

November 8, 2009 - Leave a Response

If you’re not doing the big crowd, tons of family thing this Thanksgiving, think about coming to Franklin and the mountains for the holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The weather is usually good – I can remember several Thanksgivings where we gloried in blue skies and sunshine, 60 degrees, and crispy crunchy leaves underfoot.  Take a walk in the countryside and listen to the birds, talk with your partner, breathe, smile, and be thankful.

Sit a Spell Cabin’s kitchen is completely equipped and several Thanksgiving dinners have been cooked and shared there.  If you like to go all out and Read the rest of this entry »

Wi Fi Hotspots in Franklin, NC

September 28, 2009 - 4 Responses

Where are the Wi Fi hot spots in and around Franklin, NC? I thought this would be useful to know. As I walked out of Walmart the other day, I saw a visitor from South Carolina trying to pick up a wireless signal – he was hunched over his laptop, sitting in the back of his van, and the rain was pouring down.

Checking email?

Much more comfortable to sit at a table and have a great cup of coffee while checking your e-mail and cruising the web, eh? Off the top of my head (I hope others add their comments and we’ll expand the list):

  • The Rathskeller – free, in town, cappucino, beer, sandwiches, goodies baked right there
  • Main Street Coffee & Tea – also free, in town, yummy coffee drinks, baked goods, snacks, also home of Pantaleo Photography
  • Macon County Historical Society – free, in town, you can use a patio out back in nice weather or come inside and learn more about the history of Macon County and peruse their exhibits

Add to the list … update on 11/28 – FROG Quarters at 573 Main Street is a hot spot. This is the headquarters for the Friends of the Greenway, and you can enjoy a coffee drink, snack, baked goods, while you cruise the web and peruse the arts and crafts. Their hours are generous – M – Sat from 8 am to 6pm, and Sun 1pm – 5pm.

Another hotspot – The Boiler Room Steak House in The Fun Factory at 1024 Georgia Road.  You can check e-mail and surf the web while enjoying a meal, dessert, or coffee drink.  This is also a great spot for morning coffee drinks, or a sweet treat at The Dessert Factory.  Since it’s in The Fun Factory, your kids can blow off some steam while you’re using your laptop, and all will end up happy.

More … DNet Wi Fi in town – just sit down on a bench and there you go! Easy peasey.

New public library, south of town, wonderful space, plenty of room to set up your laptop. Restrooms, vending machines, and it’s quiet!

McDonalds – although you might have to buy service for a minimal fee. Not sure about that.

Jer’s Kitchen – Homemade and Yummy!

February 19, 2009 - Leave a Response

We spent Valentine’s Day weekend in Franklin, at Sit a Spell Cabin.  The weather was lovely for February – sunny skies, moderate temps, breezy but not too much.  Daffodils are popping out all over and spring is much anticipated.  I enjoy taking a morning walk from Sit a Spell Cabin out to the main road, Lakey Creek Road, and looking for spring greenery along the way, watching the fog rise above the fields and eventually the mountains.

Sooner or later a body’s got to eat lunch, and we decided to visit a place new to us – Jer’s Kitchen - located in the Whistle Stop Mall along the Georgia Road.  Friends had highly recommended Jer’s Kitchen and when we realized the chef was Jerri Fifer, we had to go!  Read the rest of this entry »

The Sheffield Mine

June 30, 2007 - One Response

The Sheffield Mine, located in Cowee (north of Franklin) is one of only three native ruby and sapphire mines in Macon County, North Carolina. They’re located at 385 Sheffield Farms Road, off of Leatherman Gap Road, about 5 miles north of Franklin. Give them a call at 828-369-8383 for directions and more information.

Cowee is the area where most of the mining activity took place at the turn of the century. Read this article at The Sherpa Guides web site to learn more about The Cowee Gem Region!

Visiting a mine and sitting down at the flume, working your way through buckets of dirt to find a ruby or sapphire is a lot more fun than it sounds at first! At least, that’s what I found out last summer when I spent a half-day at the Sheffield Mine. Read the rest of this entry »

Taste of Scotland Festival in Franklin

June 4, 2007 - Leave a Response

Franklin and the surrounding area have a deep Scottish heritage – the mountains of Western North Carolina reminded the Scots-Irish settlers of their homeland – and many settled here. That heritage will spill into the streets of downtown Franklin during the annual Taste of Scotland Festival – held June 15, 16, and 17, 2007.

A Friday Night Ceilidh kicks off the festival with food and entertainment at the Big Bear shelter on the Greenway! You’ll be treated to bagpipe music with Jean Hayes, official piper of the Scottish Tartans Museum (5pm), barbeque and music by Patton Valley Strings (6pm), and a performance by Kula & Troen at 6:45.

On Saturday, head for the day long street festival, centered on Main Street, with all day entertainment, Scottish foods, Read the rest of this entry »
